Broken spring
The opener may not be strong enough to lift a door after a spring breaks.
Troubleshooting guide
A garage door that will not open may point to a broken spring, opener problem, sensor issue, cable damage, or track resistance.
Common causes
The opener is not always the cause. If the door is unusually heavy, opens only a few inches, or slams shut, the spring system may be involved. If the opener clicks or hums, sensors, wiring, or drive components may be involved.
The opener may not be strong enough to lift a door after a spring breaks.
Motor, gear, wall-control, remote, keypad, or receiver problems can interrupt operation.
Misaligned or blocked safety sensors can prevent normal closing and cause confusing behavior.
Damaged hardware can bind the door and make the opener stop or reverse.
What to check safely
Do not attempt spring or cable repair yourself. Instead, describe what happens when you press the wall button, whether the opener light flashes, and whether the door moves at all.
Is the door closed, halfway open, crooked, or stuck open?
Does the opener click, hum, flash, reverse, or do nothing?
Look from a safe distance for a separated spring, loose cable, bent track, or broken roller.
